The Centre at Kerikeri

The journey to build The Centre at Kerikeri started in the 1980's when two local Kerikeri men, John Dalton and Doug Turner started lobbying the Bay of Islands county council with the idea of replacing the Kerikeri Memorial Hall as the area's cultural centre.

Land for the new centre was purchased in 1989 and the Kerikeri Civic Trust was started in 1995 with the purpose of funding and building the project.  Constuction was started in October of 2003 and the official opening is to be in mid 2005.

Features of stage 1include

  • A 400+ seat auditorium
  • 350sq/m sub divisible function and events hall.
  • Theatre bar and reception facilities

With stage 2 to include a 400+ flat floor outdoor theatre and events plaza, with stage 3 to provide stage 2 with a retractable roof.

As well as all of these community pleasing features, the building was constructed using Reids Nirvana insulate concrete wall system, and at 17 metres, features the highest Nirvana panel ever to be lifted in New Zealand.  The Centre at Kerikeri will make excellent use of the superior temperature and sound insulation that Nirvana offers.

The project has used more that 200 contractors and tradesmen from the local community, as is of such quality that it will certainly be the centre of Kerikeri arts for the foreseeable future.
